Anti-counterfeiting and traceability for a safer beauty

In recent weeks, the European Union Intellectual Property Office - EUIPO - through the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights has highlighted in a report on the Economic performance of IPR indicators the EU-wide upswing in the registration of patents and intellectual property certifications, which have returned to pre-covid levels. While this trend is positive for the Union's economic recovery, it is nevertheless essential to protect the results of companies' investments in research and development from the threats posed by product counterfeiting.

Addressing counterfeiting means also protecting consumer safety as fakes products can have damaging consequences on health and safety of consumers. Involving stakeholders, producers and organizations to seek real solutions, in all industrial sectors is necessary. Worth mentioning in this context is the Blockathon Forum supporting a blockchain based project whose objective is to develop a solution for product authentication and help enforcement authorities in the fight against counterfeiting. The Forum serves also to raise awareness of companies on the challenge of product authenticity, so to facilitate the search for solutions and technologies that are fit for purpose.

The topic of anti-counterfeiting and traceability is also very timely for the cosmetics industry. In early June, EUIPO published a survey on the behaviour of young people online and their relationship with the purchase of counterfeit products and access to pirated digital content. The survey revealed that 37% of young people have voluntarily purchased one or more counterfeit products, registering a significant increase compared to the pre-pandemic scenario. In particular, hygiene and personal care products, cosmetics, and perfumes made up 12% of the counterfeit products that young people most often purchase intentionally.

Anti-counterfeiting and traceability of cosmetic products were the central topics of a Cosmotalks session during the latest edition of Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna, TRACK & TRACE IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY: HOW BRANDS TAKE CARE OF THEIR CONSUMERS.
